How to read Andersen window sizes? ›

The best way to determine the size of an Andersen® window or patio door is to measure the unobstructed glass dimension, or the visible glass surface you can see and touch. If the Andersen® product is a standard size, then match the visible glass dimensions to the unit size in the size charts below.

Required Dimensions

Minimum net clear opening area of 5.7 square feet (exception of 5 square feet for openings at grade). Minimum net clear opening height of 24" (inches). Minimum net clear opening width of 20" (inches).

That is, most window manufacturers use a four-digit number for window size. The first two numbers here will be the width (in feet then inches), while the last two numbers will be the height (again in feet then inches). So for instance, a window labeled 2832 is 2 feet, 8 inches wide and 3 feet, 2 inches tall.

Measuring Sliding, Double-Hung or Single-Hung Windows

Measure the width of your single- or double-hung window from trim to trim in the middle. On a sliding window, measure from trim to trim at the center. Measure the height of your double- or single-hung window. On a sliding window, measure the height in the middle.

A window's size notation is its width and height combined. The first two measurements are for the window's width, and the second two are for the window's height. For example, a 2426 window is two-foot-four-inches wide and two-foot-six-inches tall.

Do You Measure a Window from the Inside or Outside? The most accurate measurement for a window is taken on the outside of the building. Don't make the mistake of measuring the window frame! The measurements should be taken of the aperture opening where the window is fitted.

When ordering replacement windows, use the combination of width and height (the number in parenthesis). For example, a window that's 32 inches by 62 inches is 2852 (two feet eight inches by five feet two inches).

As you determine egress window size and placement, be aware that: The International Building Code advises that every bedroom must contain at least one egress window. The window must be at least 5.7 square feet, 20 inches wide by 24 inches high. Its opening must be no higher than 44 inches from the floor.

What is the smallest window that meets egress requirements? ›

The bottom of the egress window opening can't exceed 44" from the finished floor. The minimum opening area of the egress window is 5.7 square feet. The minimum egress window opening height is 24" high. The minimum egress window opening is 20" wide.

Place a tape measure horizontally between the inside jamb on the left and the right. Close the window and make a similar measurement from jamb to jamb near the middle of the window. Measure the distance between the jambs at the top of the window. Record the shortest measurement.

Measure the window opening at three points on the width (top, middle and bottom) and height (center and opposite sides). If the sizes differ slightly, use the smallest measurement for each category. Then, simply remove ¾-inch from the width and height and it will give you the window size you need.
