What is a stick and puck session? ›

Stick & Puck sessions offer players of all ages the opportunity to practice hockey skills or just have fun skating, stick handling, and shooting in an informal setting.

Any player, other than a goaltender, who catches a puck must immediately knock or place it back down to the ice. Any violation of this will result in a two-minute minor.

Full equipment is required for ages 17 and under. For ages 18 and over, full equipment is highly recommended. The minimum equipment required for ages 18 and over is a helmet (facemasks are strongly recommended), shin pads, sticks, and gloves.

Hockey gloves must be worn by all participants.

Full equipment is permitted and recommended however, there will be no dressing room provided. Players can get dressed next to the rink on benches provided. Players must bring their own pucks.

The National Hockey League (NHL) introduced the icing rule in September 1937 to eliminate a common delaying tactic used by teams to protect a winning margin. A November 18, 1931 game between the New York Americans and Boston Bruins is cited as one extreme example that led to the ban on the practice.

From a defensive standpoint, it moves the puck as far away from the own net as possible. It also removes or decreases the risk of offsides or neutral zone turnovers. Additionally, it advances the attack deep into the enemy zone in the case that an offensive player gains possession of the puck.

While the goalkeeper is NOT permitted to “throw” the puck forward (i.e. catching the puck in their glove, closing their hand and then propelling it to a teammate), the normal hand pass criteria would also apply to the goalkeeper .

Another holds that the word's etymology gave the puck its name: some people believe the word comes from the sport of hurling and could derive from the Scottish Gaelic puc or the Irish poc, meaning to poke, punch, or deliver a blow.

In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance, and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a "puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. The team which scores the most goals is declared the winner.
