How to dress for indoor ice skating? ›

We recommend an assortment of leggings or slim joggers, lots of base layers to alternate between, a couple of jumpers or hoodies, a reliable coat and an abundance of socks. As you become more comfortable at the rink, you may opt for less layers (like some figure skaters).

Working out in general is a great way to relieve stress because physical activity releases endorphins in the brain. Learning to ice skate also boosts self-confidence and hones focus as you learn the many new moves skating offers, like crossovers, going backwards and spinning.

Outdoor ice rinks and frozen ponds, rivers, and canals, serve several purposes, allowing for physical activities during the winter season such as recreational ice skating and figure skating, and also function as an affordable place for players to engage in team winter sports such as ice hockey, bandy, rinkball, ...

Remember to avoid anything too baggy or long that may get in the way of your skates. Jeans are a big no when it comes to ice skating. Tight jeans will restrict your movement and take longer to dry after a fall on the ice. Instead, stick to thermal pants and sweatpants to protect the bottom half of your body.

It is a good idea to wear what is comfortable and will keep you warm. Shorts or short sleeved tops are permitted but should you fall over you run the risk of scrapping your knees and elbows on the ice. Trousers and long sleeved tops are recommended. Gloves can help protect your hands and keep you warm too.

The league uses natural ice for all matches, made by freezing water on a rink surface. However, other aspects of hockey do use synthetic ice. Many NHL teams use synthetic ice for practice.

Skating works the legs and glutes as you power through movement while your arms and core get a workout as you balance your body during the movement. Skating also helps build strength, especially in the major muscle groups of the lower body – the gluteals, quads, hamstrings, and calves.

How does an ice rink stay frozen? The most common method of refrigeration used in keeping an ice rink frozen is an indirect refrigeration system. This is where a liquid refrigerant (often ammonia) absorbs heat from a secondary liquid (often brine) which has absorbed heat from the source.

When you think you might be about to fall or that you are losing your balance, bend your knees and then roll off to either side, as if you were going to sit down on an invisible chair. When you bend your knees, the body moves closer to the ice and if you still fall, it is not too high.

Most ice rinks will keep the air temperature at a brisk 55-65 degrees and the on-ice temperature between 17 and 29 degrees. This temperature can affect how you skate, how often you cut your steel and what hollow or profile you choose.

If you're headed to the hockey rink to cheer on your favorite team, make sure you have a jersey handy to show off your pride. A long-sleeved top worn underneath will add extra protection from cool drafts, and cozy sweats will help keep your bottom half warm while sitting on a chilly metal bench.

Wear an ice skating dress with a skirt all the way around the waist. Some coaches will allow their female skaters to wear leotards or leggings to practice. However, most prefer their skaters to wear a skating dress since it allows the coach to critique their skaters' forms, so be sure you ask first!
