For Robert Allen, a 66- year-old Vietnam veter- an and resident at JFK Medical Haven Hospice, his wish was to see his beloved New York Knicks play at Madison Square Garden. That is when JFK Haven Hos- Wishes Team stepped in to help wish come true. Amy Chorma, a JFK Haven Hospice nurse, believes making a connection with the pa- tient is key to quality care. my conver- sations with Robert, I discovered he was a big fan of the New York she said. knew if he had a chance to at- tend a game with his wife, it would be a won- derful experience and a special memory for them Chorma shared wish with Maureen Sau- vigne-David, a volunteer coordinator and member of the Haven Hospice Wishes Team.

The JFK Haven Wishes Team be- gan several years ago as a way for and volun- teers to maintain the hu- man connection with pa- tients and families cop- ing with a life-threaten- ing illness at a time when technology and reporting demands were making it to do so. Amy told us about wish, I knew we could make it said Sauvigne- David, who reached out to her son, North Bruns- wick Police Sgt. Mike Sauvigne, for guidance on where to get tickets for a game. Sgt. Sauvigne reached out to his friend Pat Colli- gan, the president of the NJ Police Benevolent As- sociation, who had a con- tact with the New York Knicks.

When hearing about wish, not only did the Knicks send tickets for last game against the L.A. Clippers, but they also sent an autographed basketball and jersey. Allen was so touched by the gift that it brought tears to his eyes. Getting the tickets was only the step. With Allen in a wheel- chair, transportation lo- gistics needed to be sort- ed out.

Once again, Sgt. Sauvigne reached out, this time to Brothers Be- fore Others, a not-for- charity of active and retired law enforce- ment of which he is a member. Brothers Before Oth- ers provided door-to- door car service for Allen and his wife, Laverne, and JFK Haven Hospice members. NYPD Detective Pat Donahue escorted them inside. A fan for more than 30 years, Allen never had the chance to see a game at Madison Square Gar- den.

Not only did they get upgraded to the suite seats, but the Garden of Dreams or- ganization arranged a meet-and-greet with the players, and former play- ers, during warm-ups.
