The Sims Direct Communications Twitter account made a surprising announcement yesterday. As of December 12th 2022, The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will no longer be available for players on PC or Mac.
What is the Legacy Edition?
Originally released back in 2019, The Sims 4: Legacy Edition was created for players who were running older 32-Bit OS systems on PC and for those playing on Non-metal Mac systems.
The Legacy Edition had all the features of The Sims 4 as well as the option to add additional content up to and including The Sims 4 Island Living Expansion Pack.
Why are the changes happening?
Since the older systems are no longer supported and haven’t been officially since 2019, as well as the added limitations of these operating systems, EA has decided that now is the time to fully close the door on these systems.
How do I know which version of The Sims 4 do I have?
If you are not sure which version of The Sims 4 you have or if you are currently playing The Sims 4: Legacy Edition, you can check the version numbers.
Currently if you are running The Sims 4 Legacy Edition, your version numbers will look as followed:
PC – 1.xx.xxx.1520 = PC Legacy Edition
Mac – 1.xx.xxx.1620 = Mac Legacy Edition
However, if you are playing the standard full version of The Sims 4, your version numbers will look like this:
PC – 1.xx.xxx.1020 = PC Standard Edition
Mac – 1.xx.xxx.1220 = Mac Standard Edition
You can find your version number in the main menu of The Sims 4.
How do I still play The Sims 4?
There is good news though, providing you have a PC or Mac that fits The Sims 4 requirements, you will be able to keep playing. Providing you are running a 64-bit version of Windows or a Metal MacOS (macOS 10.11/El Capitan) or above, you will be able to play the full version of The Sims 4.
However, while it is sad to see the Legacy Edition being discontinued, this means players who have been playing this version will be to experience a number of packs and additional content they haven’t been able to before. This includes several expansion packs such as The Sims 4 Cottage Living and High School Years, The Sims 4 Werewolves Game Pack, The Sims 4 Paranormal Stuff as well as a variety of The Sims 4 Kits!

Open origin. Go to your game details. There'll be an option 'Launch options', click edit. 'When launching this game' > Choose Sims 4 instead of the Legacy Edition.
You would only be able to do this by uninstalling The Sims 4 reinstall and deselect the Legacy Edition. However it does not take up that much space so you might prefer to just change to 64bit. To do this rightclick the game in Origin select Game properties and on the Advanced tab select 64 bit from the dropdown.
Legacy is not an upgrade. It is a version made for those that are unable to run the standard version. The Legacy edition is limited in that it can not run new packs and it does not have access to the gallery.
If you're an EA Play member, heads up that we're removing The Sims 4 Deluxe Edition from The Play List on October 18, 2022. We're replacing it with The Sims 4 EA Play Edition, also on October 18, 2022. The Sims 4 EA Play Edition will also include The Sims 4 Get to Work Expansion Pack.
What differs with each iteration are the in-game world and sim customizations, the expansion and stuff packs, along with other playable features. In October 2022, game developer Maxis announced that The Sims 5, the upcoming installment also known as Project Rene, is coming.
No, when you try to open The Sims 4, if you are on a 32-bit OS PC you will be asked to download The Sims 4 Legacy Edition. Will The Sims 4 Legacy Edition receive any additional content or bug fixes in the future? No, The Sims 4 Legacy Edition will not receive any more content or bug fixes.
You can also check by seeing if you can access any online features, the LE has no Gallery access. To properly get rid of the LE you have to uninstall the current version of the game and the LE and download just the normal version.
@shayshay229 Just sign into the EA App with the same email address and password you were using in Origin, and all your content should be available to download from your game library. There's no need to spend any more money. I don't work for EA.
A Legacy game/save, to my understanding, is a save where you keep playing a sim from each new generation. There are some legacy challenges that have different goals to reach with each generation.
To keep your households safe from deletion, you must keep them under the My Households tab. Another thing you can do to avoid sims being culled is set the Maximum Sim Count dropdown at the bottom of Manage Households to a higher number.
For instance, the 'Seasons' expansion will add the 4 seasons to the game, plus a bunch of items and interactions that make use of the seasons, and even a couple of new careers. Each expansion has it's own features and items it adds to the base game... but nothing that is essential to playing the core game.
Quick Compare. – The Sims 4 Standard Edition: This is the base game that will show up in the Origin Store and other retailers a few days after the game is released. – The Sims 4 Limited Edition: Includes the Life of the Party Digital Content. Comes with the Flaming Tiki Bar furniture and extra outfits for your Sims.
The Sims 4 Seasons is our top choice when it comes to the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack overall. We consider it to be an essential expansion given the sheer amount of compelling new content that it brings to the table.
The Sims 4 Legacy Edition is now available for players who already own The Sims 4. You can add it to your Game Library by opening the Details page for The Sims 4 on Origin. It will be located in the Extra content tab. Once added to your Library, press 'Download' to download and install it.
Luckily, you don't need to start big. The base game for The Sims 4 is completely free, and although you might feel like you're missing out on all the added fun of the expansion packs, there's still plenty to enjoy in the base game alone. Here's everything you can do, see, and enjoy with just the free base game.
