What is PrepRite ProBlock used for? ›

A proven performer, Sherwin-Williams PrepRite ProBlock Interior/ Exterior Latex Primer/Sealer is a great overall priming solution. This premium primer assures adhesion of the topcoat — including to slick, glossy surfaces — and seals out solvent-sensitive stains and minor dried water stains and tannin.

After priming, allow to dry 4 hours, test a small area for bleeding by applying the topcoat before painting the entire project. If the stain bleeds through, apply a second coat of primer and allow to dry overnight and retest before topcoating.

Thoroughly clean the surface before applying to smoke-stained areas. Apply one or two coats of Multi-Purpose Latex Primer/Sealer and test a small area for bleeding before painting the entire surface. Testing: Always check for compatibility and adhesion to the surface by applying a test patch of 2-3 square feet.

"Most latex primers dry in 30 minutes to an hour, but for best results, don't paint until the primer completely dries, which can take up to three hours depending on temperature and humidity," Woelfel suggests. Latex primers are water-based, which Hayfield says typically dry faster than solvent-based primers.

DRY & RECOAT

When dry, surface can be immediately recoated, top coated, or wet sanded. For best results, allow to Primer to dry for 1 hour before dry sanding. Test in an inconspicuous area to be sure Primer is dry enough for sanding.

It takes approximately 24 hours for a typical primer to dry. However, depending on the type of primer and the conditions under which it is applied, the drying time can vary significantly. For example, oil-based primers may take up to 48 hours to dry completely, while water-based ones typically dry much faster.

Most latex primers dry to the touch in 30 minutes to one hour. But for best results, don't paint until the primer completely dries—which can take up to 3 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Once the primer is completely dry, it's prime time for painting.

Once you've completed your last coat of primer, you should go ahead and sand before applying your first coat of base color. However, there is no reason at all to sand between coats of primer. It will only add more work to your plate with no visible benefits.

Do I shake primer? ›

Once your area and surface are prepped, shake the primer can vigorously for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle, and shake often during use. Hold the can upright, moving from side-to-side while spraying lightly and evenly about 12″ from area being painted.

(Note: Bonding primers are not recommended for use over peeling paint).

Depending on the product, bonding primers can also offer the advantage of accommodating lots of different coatings, including hot coatings with a high solvent content. Whereas an exothermic reaction may cause a major problem with a regular primer, the premium products can accept just about anything.

Priming and application of two coats at the recommended film thickness can help where hiding of a previous coating or application to new drywall is a factor. If the wood has bleeding (such as tannin or knot- holes), prime with Multi-Purpose Primer. Other primers may be appropriate.
