There are two highways from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. The northern route is via I-80 which will lead to Reno, NV. The southern route is via California Highway 50, which leads to South Lake Tahoe.

Snow tires must have a tread depth of 6/32" with a "M & S" imprint on the tire's sidewall. Requirement Three (R3): Chains are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

The road is also open north to Salmon Creek, Gorda, and Pacific Valley destinations. If you are driving from the north, unfortunately, it's a different story. Highway 1 is still closed at Limekiln due to a landslide that occurred in Winter of 2022, and you cannot reach us by driving straight through from Big Sur.
